“A Hidden America: Children of the Plains” Diane Sawyer files this report about Pine Ridge on Friday’s 20/20…

Diane Sawyer Takes an In-Depth look at the Young Dreamers and Survivors of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Fighting Against Decades of Neglect, Airing Friday, October 14 @ 9pm on WDAY/WDAZ.

Diane Sawyer travels to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation where some of the proudest Americans, living in unthinkable conditions, refuse to be defeated — a young girl filled with “American Idol” dreams, yet facing a life-changing reality; a high school quarterback whose strength and spirit knows no bounds; a magical little girl filled with hope. For over a year, as she has done with the poverty-stricken children from parts of Appalachia and Camden, New Jersey, Sawyer and her team followed young fighters and dreamers, this time from the Lakota Indian Tribe in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, living in the shadows of Mount Rushmore. A once-mighty people desperately trying to hold on, Sawyer finds that even with all of its grinding poverty and alcoholism, it’s a place from which warriors can still rise. Diane Sawyer Investigates – “A Hidden America: Children of the Plains” airs on “20/20″ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14 (9:00-10:00 p.m., on WDAY/WDAZ) on the ABC Television Network.

The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, located in the southwest corner of South Dakota, is one of the 565 federally recognized Indian Nations in the United States. It is home to an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people, most of whom identify as Oglala Lakota Sioux. The reservation is 2.2 million acres, roughly the size of Connecticut, and the residents boast a rich cultural history and deep-seeded spirituality.

Unfortunately, the Oglala Lakota on Pine Ridge now live amidst levels of poverty that rival those of the third world. 47% of individuals on Pine Ridge are living below the federal poverty level, 65%-80% of the adults are unemployed, and rampant alcoholism and an obesity epidemic combine with underfunded schools to help make it a rough place to grow up.

But in the midst of such economic despair, there are youth across the reservation who are breaking through the hopelessness with huge dreams and powerful stories. Twelve-year-old Robert Looks Twice is captain of his middle school football team, a prize-winning traditional dancer at pow-wows, president of the student council, with the biggest dream of all: to be the first Native American president. He lives with his grandmother, uncle and eight cousins, and helps feed his family with his pow-wow prize money.

Alaina Clifford is a bright, well-spoken 18-year-old cheerleader, singer and actress, known for having the best singing voice at Little Wound High School. Alaina is dating athlete and star student Montana Sierra, who graduated from the only private school on the reservation, Red Cloud Indian School, with a free ride to college from the prestigious Millennium Gates Scholarship and a dream to be an architect. But the two face a harsh reality when Alaina unexpectedly becomes pregnant only four months after they begin dating. Now Alaina has to face tough choices about her next steps, unsure of whether or not she can follow her dreams.

Twelve-year-old Louise Clifford loves reading and math, and is learning how to speak Lakota. Her spirituality is very important to her, as is her horse, Glory Bee. But Louise wrestles with an extremely unstable home life – her alcoholic mother Sissy struggles to hold down a job and keep the power and heat on throughout a harsh winter. Louise tried to commit suicide when she was just 11 years old, and now her teachers and counselors are rallying around her.

Little Tashina Iron Horse is only five years old but has a huge personality — chatty and vivacious, a bubbly student in her kindergarten class, and a tiny but talented pow-wow dancer. Tashina lives in government housing with her grandmother, parents, siblings and uncles – sometimes 19 people live in the three bedroom house together. Tashina wants to grow up to be a cop, a career choice inspired by her mother, who works long hours as a security guard at the reservation’s casino 45 minutes away. Her father, DJ, is getting his GED and applying for a position in the tribe’s fire department when tragedy strikes the family.

“A Hidden America: Children of the Plains” also profiles law enforcement officials, schools, individuals and businesses that are helping to change Pine Ridge for the better.

“A Hidden America: Children of the Plains” continues Diane Sawyer’s commitment to award-winning reporting on places on the margins. In January 2007, Sawyer delivered an eye-opening report on poverty in America, “Waiting on the World to Change,” which gave viewers insight into the lives of families in Camden, New Jersey – the poorest city in America. The report was honored with several awards, including a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, an Emmy Award and the 2008 Casey Medal from the Journalism Center on Children & Families. Sawyer and her team of producers then spent two years in the hills of Appalachia reporting the February 2009 special, “A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains,” which won a Peabody Award and a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” design crew helps Autistic Children with the McPhail Family in Medford, Oregon!

“McPhail Family, Parts 1 & 2″ — “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” travels to Medford, Oregon to surprise the McPhail family with the door knock that can change lives, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28 (7:00-8:00 & 8:00-9:00 p.m., CST on WDAY/WDAZ) on the ABC Television Network.

As a young newly married couple, C.J. and Lindsay McPhail decided they wanted to spend their lives helping others. They started the Southern Oregon Chapter of Sparrow Clubs, a non-profit organization which helps children with medical issues (a.k.a. “Sparrows”) by pairing them with a school that adopts them as their school’s Sparrow. C.J. found himself speaking to students, businesses and anyone who would listen about the incredible power Sparrow Clubs give to both students and Sparrows. His abilities as a public speaker motivated thousands of students to raise funds, perform service work, and create programs all in the name of their Sparrow. Not only were C.J. and Linsday a part of raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for kids with medical needs, they were also able to help transform schools by challenging students to look beyond themselves and serve.

C.J. and Lindsay never imagined, though, they would one day need help from the very organization they’d devoted so much of their time to. Soon after moving to Portland and running a chapter there, their oldest son, Sawyer, was diagnosed with a form of Autism and their second oldest son, Thatcher, began to show signs of Autism as well. With their children regressing, the family moved back to Medford to live on a 50-acre family property next to Lindsay’s parents. The boys showed great progress, but Sawyer still faced several challenges due to his lack of social cues. Much to the family’s surprise, Sawyer became a Sparrow, and through his endearing personality, he helped put a face on Autism and brought awareness to over 900 students in his adopted school. While their home property and the outdoors are great for the children’s progress, the house is not built for their needs. The electrical system is from 1958, and recently an outlet actually sparked and shot small flames! Rewiring would be difficult, since the home is made of cinderblock. The windows are all original and a safety hazard because they’re huge and not made of tempered glass. The plumbing is poor and leaks, creating mold in the bathrooms. Lastly, there is no heat in the back of the house. Only the kitchen, living room and front bedroom have ventilation, so the family is forced to rely on space heaters in the winter, which is extremely costly and not eco-friendly. Moving away from this house is financially impossible, and nothing they want to do anyway since the property is crucial to the boys’ progress.

The “EM:HE” design team has just seven days to build a brand new home for the McPhail family, who have been whisked away on a dream vacation to the new Aulani Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, while “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” team leader Ty Pennington, designers Paul DiMeo, Paige Hemmis, Ed Sanders and new designer comedian Jeff Dye, along with local builders Ark Built Renovations and community volunteers, build the structure.

Why did an 8th Grader Shoot his Classmate? ABC’s 20/20 report this Friday

Juju Chang’s Report on One of the Most Controversial Bullying Cases of Our Time Airs on “20/20,” Friday, October 7 @ 9pm on ABC.  Plus: Chris Cuomo Investigation into a Controversial Birth Control Pill.

In February 2008, 14-year old Brandon McInerney and 15-year old Lawrence King sat a row apart in 8th grade English. Just days before Valentine’s Day, Brandon brought a gun to middle school and shot and killed Larry in front of his classmates. The unanswered question remains, why? Could a school yard crush – one boy’s same-sex attraction – be a motive for murder? And, when one student is allowed to dress in women’s attire and openly professes his attraction to another boy, does the line between exactly who bullied whom suddenly become blurred? Will a jury convict a boy who was barely 14 of first degree murder and a hate crime, and if not, are they blaming the victim for causing his own death?

“20/20″ goes inside one of the most controversial bullying cases of our time. Juju Chang’s report, which includes interviews with the teacher who gave Larry a dress, Brandon’s mother and brother and six of the jurors, among many others, airs on “20/20″ on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

The ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ design crew surprised the Gibbs Family in West Union, Iowa yesterday!

Yesterday, October 2, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” traveled to West Union, Iowa to surprise a family with the door knock that can change lives. “EM: HE” host Ty Pennington and the team of designers surprised the Gibbs family. Audrey Gibbs is a mother, a widow, a farm owner and a maternal optimist who won’t let anything stop her from raising her six children, not even her blindness and her battle with a fatal disease.

Seven months after her husband died, Audrey had a brain aneurism that affected a quarter of her brain – leaving her legally blind. The doctors cannot say if she is going to lose her sight completely or even if she is going to live or die. Audrey has always been pragmatic and has no time for self-pity. She is passionately committed doing whatever it takes to raise her kids. Realizing she could not continue working as a cosmetologist, she decided to attend massage therapy classes, as she knew it was a career she could still practice after losing her sight. However, Audrey does worry about what will happen to her kids – should the worst happen. The Gibbs family own and live on a farm which they rent portions of to local farmers for additional income. Their farmhouse is in need of significant repair, with no working toilet, a ceiling that’s caving in and a layout that doesn’t work for the family at all- especially for Audrey, if she loses her eyesight completely.

The “EM:HE” design team has just seven days to build a brand new home for the Gibbs. The family has been whisked away on a dream vacation to Boca Raton Resort & Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, while “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” team leader Ty Pennington, designers Paul DiMeo, Tracy Hutson, Sabrina Soto, Jeff Dye and local builders Larson Construction Company, Inc., as well as community volunteers, build the structure.

The build location is 24151 Lincoln Road, West Union, Iowa 52175.

Pennington joins previously announced “Project Runway” star Tim Gunn and renowned fitness and nutrition expert Harley Pasternak in a quest to help viewers take positive steps toward a better way of life. “The Revolution” team will help viewers with complete transformations in all areas of their lives, including family, physical and emotional well-being, fashion, home design, personal finance, food, jobs and more. “Ty’s passionate and deep connection to everyone he helps makes him the perfect choice to join “The Revolution” said Frons. “The energy he brings with him is an excellent complement to our previously named hosts, Tim Gunn and Harley Pasternak. Our goal is to include inspiring and informative motivators as we build “The Revolution” team and continue to evolve our lineup with the type of lifestyle programming that daytime viewers are interested in seeing.”

“The Revolution” is produced by 3Ball Productions, the producers of “The Biggest Loser,” “Masterchef” and ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition.” JD Roth and Todd Nelson serve as executive producers.

Pennington believes that, often, changing your life begins with changing your space and how you live in it. Along with his design expertise, he will also bring his love of food, art, style and his passion for supporting and championing people to go after their dreams to “The Revolution.” For the last decade, he has witnessed the impact that having a safe and beautiful home can have on a family, and he will apply this personal credo to “The Revolution.” The instantly recognizable sound of Ty Pennington’s “Good Morning!” has become an unmistakable sign of hope for families and communities, as he has helped transform the lives of thousands, while inspiring millions more around the world. Under the leadership of the charismatic design and style expert, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is consistently rated among the top 20 of all television programs. It has won two Emmys for Outstanding Reality Program and two People’s Choice Awards.

In addition to many international series, Pennington also spearheads a wide range of lifestyle and decor brands under his name, including Ty Pennington Impressions with Westminster Fabrics, and continues his partnership with industry leader Howard Miller, designing new pieces for his Signature Home Furnishings by Ty Pennington. The line features high-quality, casual contemporary furniture that’s easily coordinated. Ty Pennington Style is Pennington’s seasonal home decor line carried at Sears, and his flooring Ty Pennington Collection for Lumber Liquidators is available in stores and online nationwide.

Pennington’s latest book, How Good Design Can Change Your Life (Simon & Schuster), is an intimate look at his design inspirations with dŽcor advice and tips. It followed up his New York Times bestseller Ty’s Tricks (Hyperion), which is part reference and part behind-the-scenes in his own home, which he completely remodeled himself. Pennington first won national attention as the quirky and creative carpenter on the groundbreaking home improvement series “Trading Spaces.” He lives in Los Angeles.

Previously announced “The Revolution” hosts include Tim Gunn, the star and notable “Mentor” of Lifetime’s “Project Runway,” and Harley Pasternak, renowned fitness and nutrition expert known for the 5-Factor Fitness diet. Gunn is on a mission to make good style accessible for any women with any body shape, at affordable prices. He will help find that stylish woman inside and can help women express their true selves to the world. Pasternak doesn’t believe in spending hours in the gym, and realizes everyone has a limited time. He will help each individual find a personalized diet and fitness plan that works for them.

In April, ABC announced that it was expanding the focus of its daytime lineup to include more programming that is informative and authentic and centers on transformation, food and lifestyle. In addition to “The Revolution,” “The Chew” is an innovative and groundbreaking daily talk show that celebrates and explores life through food that premiered on September 26th.
